Curriculum Vision: English
Our aim is for all our children to be fluent readers, with a love of literacy, able to communicate effectively – both orally and in writing. We want our children to be knowledgeable across the curriculum, which is adapted according to their needs. Our curriculum has key milestones to make expectations clear. It is well sequenced and planned so that knowledge is built upon, the curriculum is sequential and progressive from Early Years to the end of Year 2. We encourage our children to have high aspirations and to believe in themselves, so that they feel successful at every stage of their education and beyond.
Writing planning should follow our school format and include the following:
· A clear independent outcome
· Clear purpose for writing
· Opportunities to promote oracy to enable children to become effective communicators across the curriculum, speaking with clarity and confidence
· National Curriculum taught skills
· An emphasis on presentation – children taking pride in their work and aspiring to
· A progressive teaching sequence building on prior knowledge and inline with half termly milestones
· Planned, high level vocabulary
· Links to spelling rules, common exception words, handwriting and application of phonics
· High-quality stimuli to support the teaching and learning
· Follow the school’s agreed lesson structure
Oracy
Communication is the most important skill in life. To understand and be understood is a basic human need which our curriculum has at its heart.
We aim to:
· Develop vocabulary, grammar and pupils understanding for reading and writing by hearing quality spoken language.
· Gain information by listening in a variety of contexts.
· Elaborate, explaining, clarifying thinking and explaining their understanding.
· Use discussion to challenge, to probe and remedy misconceptions.
· Present ideas clearly
